The story behind the toothpick creations of Billy Burke
This Ferris wheel is seen standing in Burke’s living room. It is 8 feet tall and now stands in the Folsom prison museum in Folsom, CA. This Ferris wheel features 32 seats and lights with music playing. The lights make the Ferris wheel appear as if it's made out of glass or crystal. But it is indeed made out of toothpicks and glue.
This Ferris wheel is part of the "Toothpick Fantasy" carnival that is on display at the Musee Mecanique museum on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. The exact date this was built is unclear but it is suspected to be sometime during the 1970’s. It’s structure is strong and sturdy just like the larger Ferris wheels.
What you see here is the base of a Ferris wheel that on display at the Solano County (CA) fair in 1984. Look closely and you can see the ticket booth nearby with fair-goers standing around. Also, notice the detail of the steps used to load riders onto the Ferris wheel and the control building to the left of the ticket booth.
This Ferris wheel is part of a carnival shown at the Sacramento County Fair in 1960. Pictured here is the carnival creator, Billy Burke, with his mother-in-law Madeline Bliss, standing in front.
